Well, it really depends on what you want. Hacknet is a singleplayer game with a very linear story and absolutely no open world.

After the first few hours of an excellent tutorial, hackmud is an MMO.Hacknet is a much more straightforward and guided experience with a set storyline, characters and everything. Hackmud, on the other hand, is basically Eve Online, except everyone's a hacker. It's very much a game of finding and making your own fun.

Sure, there is a backstory that you can find glimpses of and that might get expanded later on, but at the core of hackmud are the other players, not just one or two specific stories that every player goes through.Frankly, I hugely prefer hackmud, partially because of actual, full-fledged scripting, but mostly because of the existence of an interconnected world. Hacknet just felt like a game of typing given commands in a given order at increasing speeds. Hmm, well, that was certainly true before, but it's not as true anymore, with in-game FAQs, manuals for oft-used commands and of course the hackmud Discord server being full of helpful information. In fact, I'd say there is sometimes a bit too much information out there with few new players actually discovering stuff for themselves.However, the game itself really does leave you hanging a bit once the MMO starts, so you'll either have to experiment a lot or you'll have to rely on other users' information.
