Share this story.Iraq is a quagmire, and things aren't getting better. Soldiers are a commodity, and the United States has found ways of making them more useful in combat. Terrible ways. If you think the United States is doing all it can to bring freedom to the world and when our soldiers are shot they bleed American flags, this is a game that will enrage you. You should probably play Medal of Honor, in fact. If you don't mind a game poking fun at the current administration and some of the more unethical things it has done. Well, you might enjoy shooting aliens in Area 51: Blacksite.It's a gutsy move to make a game so political, and I'm surprised Bill O'Reilly hasn't lambasted the title for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

The game begins in Iraq, gets weird, and then the characters are fighting for their lives in Rachel, Nevada, a tiny town famous for the rumors of alien crashes and Area 51. The game is powered by the Unreal Engine and looks great overall (although some areas can be on the bland side).The shooting also remains satisfying. The standard assault rifle is the best weapon in most circumstances, and throughout the game the simple run-and-gun play remains fun.And that's the problem with the game. I had a great time every time I played it.

I enjoyed the little political digs and the solid use of physics and gun play. Then I turned it off and never thought of it again. The single player aspect of the game is over rather quickly, and the game just throws the same enemy at you over and over. There are some welcome changes in setting a few times, but they just weren't enough to hold my interest over the long term.The one neat idea is that the better you do—the more headshots, the more you focus your team mates—the higher morale gets. This should make the people fighting with you do more, but in reality it's hard to tell the difference. It was a neat concept that just didn't do much for the overall experience.I was also a little upset that the soldiers took everything in stride.

If I was fighting in Iraq and suddenly saw the things they did, I would probably have some issues about it. If I were manning the gun on the back of a transport and had to fend off exploding bugs it would surprise me. Giant worms and flaming creatures coming for me?

That's just not normal. I felt like I was seeing extraordinary things and no one cared. The way that the characters weren't impressed made the game feel a little 'by the numbers' to me.

Some more shock and awe from the NPCs around me instead of the sometimes embarassingly hackneyed dialogue and I would have gotten into this a bit more.Blacksite is not a bad game, it just doesn't do much except feature a political slant and some squad tactics.
