But her superpower is still being extremely emotional. It doesn't mean the developers are horrible sexist monsters, it's just not great that when the character who's primarily known for being a damsel in distress finally got a game where she was the hero, they based a primary mechanic on a negative stereotype of women.I like the game. I'd love to see a sequel. But I'm not gonna pretend there's a not bit of a point there, and it would be better to find a new gimmick if there's ever a sequel.
You're missing the point. People are not saying since it's Princess Peach therefor it's all women. People are saying that using emotions as Peach's superpower was sexist BECAUSE it's already an established stereotype towards women. The game tries to empower her by being in control of her emotions which falls flat as the idea of manipulating other people with emotions doesn't seem like a very empowering thing. The main Issue I had was that it was a sucky power no matter who you give it to. If it was given to Toad people would complain that it was super annoying. Same with Wario, Waluigi, Luigi, etc. The only overly emotional thing any of the other characters have is Luigi is super scared of things.
But this would be funny even if it was Princess Peach. It's really just a stupid gameplay mechanic that is wrapped up in centuries of gender conflict around the idea of a woman's ability to control their emotions. Either way, I assume that people are still disappointed in Nintendo for assigning Peach to a damsel-in-distress role in Odyssey after giving her a more active role in 3D Land/World. Like, sure, she, but she still played a predominantly passive, weak role with the whole Bowser situation, especially considering she basically had a Cappy of her own. I assume Nintendo is going to have to start putting Peach in more consistently active roles in future Mario games, or potentially, Peach games. If they were to release another Peach game, they'd probably tweak it a little bit to make the 'Peach is an emotional mess' message less blatant. Then again, this is Nintendo, they're not the most up to date with modern Western identity politics. Nintendo isn't targeted on this often as their games are too family-friendly to introduce wildly sexualised female characters.
However, it shows up in their support of third-party games which are guilty of that (eg. Bayonetta, Xenoblade, etc).Either way, I'd be pretty excited for a Princess Peach game on the Switch. I never played the original, but it sure sounded like a cool idea.
